Samuel Oglesby, along with his two sons Joshua and Christopher, present Habitat President John Mackey with their $500 down payment.
"I've been a single dad for a few years and some friends of ours asked if I'd be interested in doing that (applying for Habitat)," said Oglesby. After decided that he had nothing to lose Oglesby applied and was gratefully accepted.
Like many others Oglesby was unfamiliar with the whole premise behind Habitat, " I didn't know a lot about it and I noticed a lot of people don't."
"I've been trying to let people know that it's not a free home, we have to work, 200 hours of service. We have a down payment. We have mortgage payments," said Oglesby.
The boys are also excited about this new opportunity that their father admits is a blessing, " they're excited that they'll have their own rooms and more room to play."
The location of this next Habitat house has yet to be announced.

Area volunteers continue to clear the Habitat lot. The next work day will be posted on our web site and in the local newspapers.
Local Habitat for Humanity Volunteers in 'Jungle Warfare'
Our local Habitat for Humanity of Pulaski County, MO has begun clearing lots to build their first Habitat home. Habitat recently announced selection of the first Habitat Partner Family, April Youman and her two young children. Now that the family has been found and their home needs have been determined the next task is to prepare a lot for building their home. The local Habitat has been looking at several alternatives for the building site. One such site is a well-known site behind the Pulaski County parking lot on Rte 66 in downtown Waynesville. This site was recently donated to Habitat and needs quite a bit of work to be ready for building. It all began Saturday, 15 June, when the 'cavalry' arrived. The HHC of the 5th Engineer Bn from Ft Leonard Wood had been raring for a 'fight'. They had been in previous contact with Habitat and were ready to take on any challenge. The call came to help fight the 'jungle', which had overtaken this lot in Waynesville. They arrived bright and early, led by their Company Commander, Company First Sergeant and Operations Sergeant. They unloaded their tools and went to work. They took a short break at noon and were fed by the Protestant Men of the Chapel from Ft Leonard Wood with food provided by Slice of Pie Restaurant. The Engineers worked throughout the day and have transformed an overgrown eyesore into a recognizable building site. With the end of this first phase, the next step will be to demolish the current buildings on the site and make way for new volunteer construction. The local Habitat wishes to express their great appreciation to the young soldiers of the 5th Engineers for their hard work and community spirit. May we see much more of this in the future. If you would like to help Habitat for Humanity please call 336-8806.

Habitat for Humanity of Pulaski County reaches formal affiliation with Habitat for Humanity International in 'record time'
Based upon the dedication and hard work of Pulaski County Habitat members, this organization was officially approved and recognized as an Affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, International. This is a very detailed organizational process to build a strong foundation for future success. Through the hard work and dedication of many volunteers we have reached this goal in record time.
This will allow the Affiliate in Pulaski County to take advantage of tax exempt benefits from National, State and Local governments. More importantly it shows the commitment of the community to Habitat and its goals for the Pulaski County Area.
What's next? Now that the organization is up and running, we need to further develop our Committees, build our volunteer base, continue development of our financial support
and most importantly find our first Habitat partner family and build them a house!
I am proud to be a part of the establishment of a new Habitat for Humanity Affiliate in Pulaski County, Missouri. There is a lot of hard work ahead but the rewards are 'beyond this world'. Through the vision and dedication of many in this community we are making Habitat in Pulaski County a reality. Habitat is about building simple, decent homes for families. But more than that... it's about our Community uniting for a common goal and that goal is lending our time and talent to help those who need a 'lift up' in our neighborhood. The response to our organization has been great, we will not have a problem with volunteers to swing hammers. However, our greater task is establishing the solid organization behind the scenes; to develop our funding and support; to find and support our partner families; to work with our local churches and businesses and then to manage the construction. All of this is no small task and will take a committed organization to make it happen and keep it going. If you could or would help us to build this 'engine' and keep it running smoothly, then drop us a line, or a FAX, or an email. Our goals are lofty and our view ahead is positive... but with the Lord's help, we will get there. Looking forward to working with you and yes, to swinging that hammer.
God Bless you and this mission,
Dick Hobbs,
President, HFH of Pulaski County, Missouri.

Cow Days Float makes a big splash!
The First Habitat for Humanity of Pulaski County Parade float made it's debut at the Dixon Cow Days festival in September, and it came back with a trophy! With a lot of hard work, our float won 2nd place for nonprofit entries.
Volunteers were also there to answer questions and collect volunteer forms.
Thanks to all who helped make that a great weekend!
