“All eight of our employees contributed to this,” said Sarah Watson, who co-owns the company with her husband, James Watson.

“We are a very small chapter of Habitat for Humanity,” said Amber Mattson, chairwoman of Public Relations for Habitat. “A donation of this size is very unusual, especially from someone who has never donated (with us) before.”

Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner.

“We provide a no interest mortgage to people, which in turn helps Habitat fund the next building project,” said Habitat of Pulaski County President John Mackey.

In addition to a down payment and the monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor into building their Habitat house and the houses of others.

Habitat was established in Pulaski County in 2001 and is now in the final stages of construction on the third habitat house.

The current project is located at on Fort Street in Waynesville, which was begun in July 2005 with an expected completion date, Mackey said, by the first of March.

Habitat for Humanity's work is accomplished at the community level by affiliates — independent, locally run, nonprofit organizations.

Each affiliate coordinates all aspects of Habitat home building in its local area — fund raising, building site selection, partner family selection and support, house construction and mortgage servicing.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action, the organization’s national Web site stated.
